Inspiration
"Tower of Hell" (Roblox), "Getting Over It" (Bennett Foddy),
What it does
The game is an Obby Platform climber, where the goal is simply to make it to the top, and is intentionally difficult. Missing a jump or hitting an obstacle results in falling and losing progress, sometimes significant progress. There are six levels, with a checkpoint at the start of each. There is a leaderboard that keeps track, each week, of who was the first to make it to the top. Supports up to a group of 4, but is equally playable solo. Can be played on mobile, PC, or VR.
How we built it
Built by a single individual in a 6 week timeframe.
Built using Blender and Horizon Worlds. Models were optimized for use in Horizon Worlds by using Blender, then imported into Horizon using the desktop editor. The pieces for the main structure and all platforms were snapped into exact position using the VR editor, and each jump was tested numerous times in both VR and mobile. All typescripting was created in the desktop editor using the AI tool. All original game music was created using AI, then imported into Horizon using the desktop editor.
Challenges we ran into
Mostly time constraints, as the game was built by a single person in 6 weeks. With more time or help, the game could have been more polished, with more features. With building this sort of game, a lot of pieces were required, and the game needed to run on all available platforms. Draw calls become a problem and affect frames, so a "Forced Culling" script was created to render only the platforms the player needs while culling out the rest, greatly reducing the draw calls and allowing for a massive structure to climb.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The game, as a whole. Proud of the overall look and feel; it came together nicely given the short timeframe to make it.
What we learned
First world built using typescript, big for me, I'm not a coder.
What's next for Star Drop
Hopefully, lots of traffic. I would like to add a second leaderboard keeping track, weekly, of the fastest times to the top. I'd also like to add save points and restart portals at each level start, so that players can pick back up at the level they left off, or start over if they feel like it.
