Inspiration

Inspired by modern games such as "Wing Fighter" and "Star Force", as well as classics such as "Space Invaders" and "Galaga". The idea was to create a game that would be immediately intuitive for gamers both new and old using a tried-and-true design with modern features.

What it does

Players take control of a Starfighter to destroy alien spacecraft in incremental timed waves. The waves get increasingly difficult and are endless; players compete with the community to be top of the leaderboard. While playing, they earn credits that can be used to purchase upgrades to their current Starfighter, or can be used to purchase and unlock different Starfighters.

How we built it

The game was built almost entirely on the Horizon Worlds desktop editor. All scripting was done by human hand. Custom models were created using a mixture of Gen AI and Blender (all Starfighter models and enemy models were made using Horizon Worlds GenAI), while custom images were created by photographing VR-created dioramas and enhancing those images through AI. Custom SFX and music were created using AI, then edited and formatted using Audactiy. All custom Nav menus and HUDS were created by human hand using Paint.net.

Challenges we ran into

Time: this game build was started after the contest was announced, and was built from the ground-up in roughly 4 weeks, which meant a lot of long-hour days to get it done. That meant a lot of good ideas for the game had to be pulled back so that a playable product could be entered for the contest.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Lior - Meet my Comp partner 1 week after the comp started. Planned and executed a cool game in a short amount of time. Frosty- My first Mobile-only game

What we learned

Lior - my first 2D mobile game, had to learn everything about how to make one. Frosty- I learned a bit more about creating Mobile UI graphics and background screens

What's next for Star Blitz

There are several next steps for this project.

  • Switch the project to the new option for Portrait mode, and all the code/design to match
  • Store to buy new ships is unfinished, will be done soon.
  • Player stats screen update.
  • More enemies, bosses, and particularly their shooting, moving and behavior patterns
  • Player secondary weapon along with its upgrade; as well as additional in-level power-ups
  • Custom main weapon FX using dynamic lighting
  • More/different background terrains
  • select ability of levels/stages along with game modes (story, endless, campaign, etc)
  • engagement options like daily login rewards and daily/weekly/seasonal quests
