Inspiration
I've lifted for years and never found a tracker that felt good to use. Most are either clunky spreadsheets or bloated with stuff I don't need. I wanted logging a workout to take seconds, and I wanted the app to actually look nice.
What it does
STAQ is a workout tracker built for speed and clarity:
- Log sets by typing or talking, like "bench 3x8 at 80", and AI turns it into structured entries
- See progress per exercise with charts, PRs and history
- Muscle insights: heatmaps, volume and weight trends per muscle, hard-set radar charts
- Routines and plans
- STAQ Pro (via RevenueCat) unlocks the deeper insights and AI features, with a 7-day free trial on annual
How I built it
Expo / React Native app with Reanimated and Skia for the charts and motion. A Bun + Express API on Railway, Postgres with Drizzle, Better Auth for login, Groq for the AI parsing. RevenueCat handles subscriptions and entitlements, with PostHog and Sentry for analytics and errors.
Challenges
- Migrating the whole backend from MongoDB to Postgres mid-build
- Getting charts and modal animations smooth on Android
- Wiring up Play billing, base plans, offers and RevenueCat end to end for the first time
What I learned
Shipping is a different skill to building. Polish can go on forever, so a hard deadline is what finally got this out the door.
What's next
STAQ is in early access on Google Play. Next up: onboarding, polish, and iOS via TestFlight.
