In the age of cancel culture, a celebrity’s past can resurface online and spark major backlash. With the internet acting as a permanent archive, it's easier than ever to uncover controversies, and supporting someone who's been “cancelled” can reflect poorly on you. That’s where StanScan comes in. StanScan gives you the full picture - so you’re not caught off guard by someone’s past.

What It Does

Introducing StanScan — your go-to tool for analyzing a celebrity’s public image over time.

With StanScan, simply enter any celebrity’s name and instantly access:

  1. Popularity Trends – Visualize how much public attention they've received over time using Google Trends data.
  2. Public Sentiment – Monitor how media tone and sentiment have shifted based on recent news coverage.
  3. Sentiment highlights – View the top 3 most notable and relevant articles associated with the celebrity.
  4. Users Also Searched – Discover the 3 most commonly associated celebrities searched alongside them.
  5. Overall Public Score – Get a composite score reflecting their current public perception.
  6. General Information – Access basic biographical data, including age, birthday, and occupation.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we faced was related to data sourcing. Initially, we wanted to use the SocialBlade API to analyze social media growth metrics across various platforms. However, due to the high cost, we pivoted to the Google Trends API. While more accessible, the Google Trends API introduced complexity in data extraction and formatting, requiring significant parsing and manipulation to achieve our desired output.

Another hurdle involved developing an methodology for retrieving relevant articles for each celebrity. We experimented with several approaches, including the use of AI-powered search agents, before ultimately settling on a web search API.

Lastly, integrating our datasets into an interactive line graph posed technical difficulties, particularly in synchronizing the backend data processing with the frontend visualization.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

  • Successfully built a large-scale database of over 3000 articles containing curated celebrity news articles from diverse sources.
  • Developed a fully functional, interactive frontend that allows users to visualize and engage with sentiment and trend data in real time.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, each team member gained valuable technical and collaborative experience.

  • Viki developed a deeper understanding of API integration and web scraping techniques.
  • Izak learned how to effectively bridge the frontend and backend, gaining experience in full-stack development.
  • Peter became proficient in using the Google Search API and conducting sentiment analysis on retrieved data.

What’s Next for StanScan.ai

Moving forward, we aim to expand our data sources by incorporating additional metrics from social media platforms, beyond just Google Trends. Our goal is to evolve StanScan.ai into a fully-developed, reliable platform that talent agents and publicists can use to monitor a celebrity’s current public perception in real time.

Furthermore, we would like to make this a service available to marketing teams to give them insight on celebrity history before they potential partner with a celebrity before knowing their background.

Additionally, we hope to implement predictive analytics to forecast how a celebrity’s reputation might evolve over time and provide data-driven recommendations for improving their public standing.
