Inspiration The inspiration for Meow Mayhem came from the desire to create a fun and engaging Mixed Reality (MR) experience that could captivate players and immerse them in a playful environment. We wanted to blend the thrill of defeating mischievous enemies with the unique interactivity all while making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

What it does Meow Mayhem is an MR game where players are transported into a world filled with one-eyed cat monsters. Armed with a magical golden cube, players must strike or throw the cube at these pesky cats. The challenge is to defeat all the cat monsters within a set time limit. The game tracks the player's kill count and displays it in real-time. Strike at least 10 cats within 20 seconds to win! Otherwise, it’s game over!

How we built it We built Meow Mayhem using:

  • Unity: For the core game development and AR setup
  • MR Foundation: To leverage MR capabilities and integrate the MR environment
  • 3D Models and Animations via Blender: Created and animated cat monsters to bring them to life
  • C++/C# Scripting: For game logic, collision detection, and player interactions
  • UI Elements: To display the kill count and timer

Challenges we ran into We faced several technological hurdles throughout the project. Setting up Unity to work with the Meta Quest 3 was particularly challenging, with configuration issues and compatibility problems slowing down our progress. Working in Mixed Reality (MR) also presented unique obstacles, such as bugs that were difficult to troubleshoot and unexpected behavior in the environment. Despite these setbacks, we persevered and found solutions to ensure the game was functional and engaging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are incredibly proud of having a fully functional MR game despite the numerous challenges we encountered. Successfully creating an interactive and visually appealing MR experience in such a short timeframe is a significant accomplishment. Additionally, we are proud of our ability to collaborate and troubleshoot as a team, overcoming technical hurdles to bring our vision to life.

What we learned This project was a tremendous learning experience for us. We gained valuable insights into developing MR games, particularly in working with the Meta XR All-In-One SDK and integrating it into Unity. We also learned the importance of debugging in real-time environments and how to adapt quickly when faced with technical challenges. The project taught us how to optimize performance in MR and improve our workflow under tight deadlines.

What's next for Meow Mayhem In the future, we envision expanding Meow Mayhem by adding more features to keep players engaged. These include:

  • New Levels: Introducing different environments and enemy types to make the game more diverse
  • Power-Ups: Adding power-ups that provide players with strategic advantages, such as slowing down enemies or increasing the cube's power
  • Online Leaderboard: Implementing a leaderboard to encourage competition and replayability
  • Enhanced Visual Effects: Improving the game's graphics and animations to make it even more immersive
