Inspiration
Standing Silent emerged from my decade-long meditation practice and study with prominent contemplative teachers. I wanted to explore how slow cinema aesthetics could function as awareness training, creating a space where viewers confront their relationship with time, boredom, and presence itself.
What it does
The video presents a nearly motionless figure standing in an illuminated wooden box, breathing. Sparse text appears like subtitles, punctuating long silences that invite viewers to simply watch and become aware of time's passage as aesthetic experience.
How I built it
I created Standing Silent using AI tools including Midjourney for initial visual concepts, Gemini 2.5 Flash and Claude for text generation and conceptual development, and Kling for video synthesis. This allowed me to work across disciplines—combining my contemplative arts practice with emerging synthetic media technologies.
Challenges I ran into
The main challenge was calibrating the duration and pacing to create genuine contemplative space without losing viewer engagement entirely. Balancing minimalism with meaning required careful consideration of when text appears and how long silences should extend.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Successfully translating meditation principles into cinematic form, creating a work that doesn't just depict stillness but actually induces a contemplative state in viewers. The piece authentically rejects narrative progression while remaining visually compelling.
What I learned
I learned that boredom itself can become aesthetic material, and that AI tools can support rather than replace contemplative artistic practices. The project reinforced my belief that art can function as awareness training with positive impacts on how we experience time.
What's next for Standing Silent
I'm exploring how this approach could expand into installation formats or longer durational works, potentially incorporating interactive elements that respond to viewer presence while maintaining the contemplative core of the practice.
