Inspiration

Have you ever driven by a produce stall on the side of the road? Have you ever wanted to stop at the said stall but been unable to due to either driving too fast, driving the wrong way, or not being able to see what was sold? We at StallWart certainly have, and we want to help bring an end to this miscommunication between farmers and friends. We have a passion for tasty and locally grown food, which farmers in any community can provide! We want to provide a 21st-century version of the classic roadside farmer stall and help make missing that perfect stall a thing of the past!

What it does

StallWart works by giving farmers a platform to have a "virtual stall." This stall can be customized with what type of produce the farmer has, the hours they are available, etc. Then, potential customers can visit the site and browse all of the stalls in their area. Once they have selected a farmer they want to purchase from and the produce that they want to buy, the customer can either pay through the website or pay the farmer in person. By giving an estimated pickup time, the farmer does not need to stand idle by their stall, they can spend time in the field or with their family instead. This ensures the produce is always ready at the right time for the customer. This will help to forge a relationship between the farmer and the community.

How we built it

Ideally, StallWart will be built using JavaScript, PHP, and SQL. JavaScript and PHP will provide all of the web functionality we require, while an SQL database will keep products, orders, and farmers organized. Right now, StallWart is still in its prototype phase. We created the demo version using MockPlus to show the features we want to implement. Our designer Shelby created all of the artwork for the website and in our pitch video.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to develop the website ourselves, but the time limitation prevented this despite both team members having web coding experience. This was the primary challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very proud of the style that has been created by our designer. This design flows well throughout the website and branding and provides a friendly but professional user interface for our customers and clients to use. We know that the digital age can be daunting for some folk, so this retro design makes the interface easy to recognize and understand. No need for flashy buttons!

What we learned

This Hackathon taught us about the challenges of developing a compelling website demo for future work. It also taught us how to think about technology and its influence in the real-world. Making websites is all well and good, but if the end product doesn't help others, then what does the website really even do?

What's next for StallWart

Next, we will need to validate our assumptions about farmer's desire to sell their goods in this way; this can be done by visiting stalls in the area. Next, it will be all in on coding the website using JavaScript, PHP, and SQL.
