Why Should I Care?
Financial markets are a fundamental part of the economy, yet many people do not know how they work. For most people, it is a very daunting task to develop skills in navigating such a complex field.
Unless you have an expert, you're on your own to learn apps like WeBull and Fidelity from the get-go.
Everybody has the potential to benefit from learning how to invest successfully long-term. Still, the huge skill gap and research required to understand day-trading and general stock trends discourages most from even attempting such a thing.
There are many things people regret not knowing at 18, and this is one of them.
Our project allows people from all backgrounds to learn the principles of investing in a simple and beginner-friendly way.
What Does It Do?
Similar to other paper-trading sites, our project simulates the growth and depreciation of stocks, in the form of plants, over time.
Our product uses AI models to adjust the market and give feedback based on the user's actions. It also uses AI to better predict the stock market trends in the future, creating a more realistic experience.
How We Built It
Using an AI model and Geometric Brownian Motion, we created a program that accurately simulates a practice stock market. This is furthered by a pretrained machine learning program that furthers learning by affecting the market based on user action.
Challenges
Since we are all computer science majors, we are learning how to use data science at a completely new angle. By simply making this project for data science, it translates to our new ability to understand how we would utilize datasets and literature reviews through a professional sense with a program.
Accomplishments
It was quite tough for us to simultaneously incorporate two AI models at the same time in our program. In a very limited amount of time, we were able to learn all about implementing these models to perfect our design.
What we learned
Except for Jack, this was the first time that our group had ever worked together on a hackathon. While we had done complicated programming problems in the past, we had never done any under the pressure of time. This unique challenge taught us valuable skills such as time management and organization. Under the stress of the clock, these skills helped us to complete our task to the best of our ability.
What's Next?
In the future, we hope to expand upon this project, perhaps officially publishing this as a free educational resource.
