Ascend

Inspiration

I wanted to create a game that is instantly familiar, easy to learn, and rewarding to master. Classic arcade games prove that simple mechanics can be incredibly engaging when paired with satisfying gameplay. My goal was to bring that experience to Reddit by adding a competitive element through daily leaderboards and quick play sessions.

What it does

Ascend is a precision-based tower stacking game where players build the tallest tower possible by perfectly aligning moving blocks. Every successful placement increases your score, while every imperfect placement makes the next challenge even harder. Miss the stack completely, and the game is over.

The game encourages replayability through personal bests and a daily leaderboard, giving players a reason to come back and improve their ranking.

How I built it

The game was developed as an interactive web experience on Reddit's Devvit platform. The core gameplay was built around smooth animations, precise collision detection, responsive controls, progressive difficulty, and persistent score tracking. Considerable effort went into polishing the gameplay so every placement feels satisfying and responsive.

Challenges I ran into

Although the gameplay is simple, making it feel polished required a lot of iteration. Fine-tuning block speed, alignment, hit detection, animations, and difficulty progression had a significant impact on the overall experience. Balancing accessibility for new players while keeping the game challenging for experienced players was another key focus.

What I learned

This project taught me that great gameplay doesn't require complicated mechanics. Small improvements in responsiveness, visual feedback, and game feel can dramatically improve the player's experience. I also learned the importance of designing around short, replayable sessions that naturally encourage players to return.

What's next for Ascend

Future improvements could include:

• Daily challenges with unique modifiers
• Unlockable themes and tower skins
• Player achievements and streak rewards
• Seasonal events and community competitions
• Additional game modes while preserving the core stacking mechanicents that we're proud of
