Inspiration NotebookLM inspired us to explore how AI can help people learn from their own documents. We wanted to take that idea further by creating a personal tutor that guides students through difficult lecture topics, checks their understanding, and adapts when they get stuck. What it does ST helps university students turn lecture materials into a guided study session. A student uploads a supported lecture file, chooses a topic, and learns through explanations and questions from ST. If their answer shows confusion, ST tries explaining the idea in a simpler way. Students can finish with an objective or theory practice quiz and receive feedback on what to review. How we built it We built the app with Next.js, React, and TypeScript. The browser parses lecture files with officeparser; a Supabase Edge Function sends relevant text and visual context to the AI tutor. The interface guides students through topic selection, tutoring, and quiz results. Challenges we ran into Getting uploaded documents to parse reliably—especially when they contain images—took careful work. We also had to troubleshoot AI provider errors and make sure quiz questions stayed grounded in the lecture instead of introducing unrelated material. Accomplishments that we’re proud of We built an end-to-end tutoring experience where ST takes the lead: it teaches a selected topic, checks the student’s understanding, and adapts its explanation when needed. Students can then test what they learned with a quiz based on the same lecture material. What we learned We learned how a Next.js app connects its interactive React interface to backend services, how to pass data through an API, and how to use TypeScript to describe that data. We also gained experience parsing documents, working with an AI service, and designing prompts that keep responses focused on a student’s materials.

What’s next for ST ST is a personal AI study tutor, and this prototype is a starting point. Next, we’d like to add real student accounts, improve document and diagram understanding, make quiz generation more consistent, add a flow where students can answer past questions of the school, and help in there assignment, and also in creating a study time table and tracking students activeness on the app to ensure consistent learning and help students track their learning over time.
