Inspiration Access to sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) information is limited in many parts of Liberia, especially rural communities. We wanted to create a simple, accessible, and inclusive platform that empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health. The idea was inspired by the need for voice-assisted guidance for people with low literacy and limited internet access.
What it does SRHR Connect is a mobile application that:
Provides trusted SRHR information in multiple languages. Offers a voice assistant for hands-free interaction. Connects users to nearby health services and emergency contacts. Ensures offline access for communities with poor connectivity.
How we built it
Frontend: Flutter for cross-platform mobile development. Backend: Firebase for authentication, database, and hosting. Voice Assistant: Google Dialogflow & Text-to-Speech APIs. Data Security: Sensitive files removed from history using git filter-repo. Collaboration: GitHub for version control and issue tracking.
Challenges we ran into
Handling low-bandwidth environments while keeping the app responsive. Designing a voice assistant that works offline. Ensuring data privacy and removing sensitive credentials from the repository. Coordinating with local health experts to verify content accuracy. Accomplishments that we're proud of Built a fully functional SRHR app in a short timeframe. Integrated voice-assisted navigation for accessibility. Created a platform that can scale to other regions and languages. Successfully cleaned the Git history to protect sensitive data.
What we learned
Importance of user-centric design in health tech. How to manage secure deployments and protect credentials. The value of community feedback in shaping features. Strategies for offline-first mobile development.
What's next for SRHR Connect
Expand to more African countries with localized content. Add interactive SRHR quizzes and self-assessment tools. Partner with NGOs and health ministries for outreach. Implement end-to-end encryption for private health queries.
