Shift Complete-Final Journey
Inspiration
Squish & Dish: Mystery Merge was inspired by the satisfying feel of merge games, the excitement of mystery collectibles, the process of transforming dough into steamed buns, and the simple joy of cute squishy characters.
I wanted to create a mobile game that is immediately understandable but still gives players meaningful choices, visible progression, memorable rewards, and a reason to play one more shift.
What it does
Squish & Dish: Mystery Merge is a single-player, fixed-portrait Simulation & Management merge game.
Players generate Dough Puffs from a Bamboo Steamer, merge matching pieces through an eight-level, recipe-inspired Bao chain, manage limited board space, and serve increasingly demanding customer orders.
Completing orders advances the Steamer Level. When the Steamer levels up, the player makes a management choice:
- Quick Steam increases production speed.
- Lucky Steam improves Rare+ collectible chances while keeping Golden discoveries genuinely rare.
Each completed order also earns a player-opened Mystery Steamer containing one of 30 collectible Squishies across five rarity tiers:
- Common
- Rare
- Epic
- Glitter
- Golden
Merges use fast, colorful kawaii-style bursts, distinct character transformations, premium Golden Bao effects, procedural audio, and playful feedback such as PERFECT SQUISH!
Discovering three unique Squishies during a shift triggers a Collector Bonus that awards a free Tiny Bao.
The Collection Book records discoveries, rarity, and duplicate quantities and persists between shifts. Each completed six-order session ends with SHIFT COMPLETE! and an immediate PLAY AGAIN option.
How it was built
The prototype was built with AI-assisted development using Claude and ChatGPT, with human direction, playtesting, design decisions, and final approval throughout the process.
The final game uses:
- HTML5
- Vanilla JavaScript
- CSS
- Pointer Events
- Web Audio API
- localStorage
The game is completely self-contained in a readable, unminified index.html and requires no external libraries, CDN resources, or network connection.
Development was completed in small playable phases:
- Generator and Squish Merge interaction
- Customer orders and SERVE gameplay
- Mystery Steamer rewards
- Collection Book, duplicates, and persistence
- Steamer Level progression
- Quick Steam and Lucky Steam management choices
- Collector Bonus
- Replay and SHIFT COMPLETE
- Accessibility and mobile-readability improvements
- Final character, visual, and audio polish
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was getting the game pace to feel right.
Early testing showed that both merging and generation felt too slow, so the timings were adjusted and retested until the interaction felt fast and responsive.
Another challenge was making the Bao evolution and collectible characters visually distinct.
Early versions relied too heavily on similar round shapes and color changes. The eight-level Bao chain was redesigned with recipe-inspired silhouettes, visible fillings, garnishes, magical treatments, royal details, and a final Golden form. The 30 collectible Squishies were also refined with recognizable, name-inspired features.
Another challenge was keeping the prototype focused.
Several larger ideas were deliberately kept out of the competition build, including:
- Additional food families
- Restaurant progression
- Boosters
- Special tiles
- Duplicate redemption
- Larger long-term progression systems
Keeping those systems out allowed the core experience to remain polished and complete.
The Simulation & Management layer also evolved during development. Quick Steam and Lucky Steam were added as meaningful choices within the existing Steamer Level system rather than creating a separate currency or economy.
What I learned
The biggest lesson was that generating features is much faster than making those features feel good.
Repeated playtesting, simplifying systems, protecting the core loop, and carefully reviewing AI-assisted changes were more important than simply adding content.
I also learned that a focused prototype can still have depth when every system feeds the same player experience.
What's next
The full Squish & Dish vision expands the prototype into a larger kitchen-to-restaurant progression with:
- Additional food families
- New customer types
- Restaurant growth
- Themed kitchens and decoration
- Special tiles
- Boosters
- Seasonal events
- Deeper collection rewards
- Duplicate redemption
- Expanded collectible sets
- Chapter-based progression
The foundation remains:
Generate → Merge → Serve → Upgrade → Unbox → Collect → Grow → Repeat.
