Inspiration
After moving house and facing the stress of inventorying possessions for home insurance claims as well as keeping things gas and electrical certificates, manuals and warranty information, we realised there was no simple, user-friendly way to document and manage home contents. Whether you're a homeowner or a tenant, keeping track of receipts, warranties, and certificates is essential but often neglected. Squirrelly Home was born from a desire to make this process simple, secure, and even a little enjoyable.
What it does
Squirrelly Home is an intuitive app (mobile and desktop) that helps users document their home contents on a room-by-room basis. Users can take photos, store receipts and warranties, add notes, and keep track of certificates like gas and electrical safety records. The app also assists in estimating the total value of home contents for insurance purposes, offering both peace of mind and practical support in case of loss or damage.
How we built it
We used bolt.new, an AI-driven app development platform, to rapidly prototype and build the app's core structure. Our initial setup focused on user onboarding, room and item modelling, and local data storage. We integrated device camera access for photo capture, built a structured content model with metadata like purchase date and warranty, and added export/import functionality for backups. The app was designed with a UK audience in mind, using local formats and terminology, but can easily be expanded for any geography.
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring data privacy while allowing backup and export/import functionality was a tricky balance.
- Designing a UI that was flexible for both quick room snapshots and detailed item-level documentation took several iterations.
- Estimating home contents value in a user-friendly way without overcomplicating the interface was challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a simple, elegant interface that makes documenting a home feel approachable.
- Building a tool that empowers both renters and homeowners to take control of their documentation without needing technical skills.
- Adding features like content valuation and ways to handle warranty and certificates, which add real utility beyond basic storage.
What we learned
- People don’t just want to record stuff—they want to feel prepared and secure.
- Simplicity is key: users prefer fast capture options with the ability to add detail later.
- Backups and exports must be transparent and easy to use, or they won’t be used at all.
- Data ownership is a priority—users want full control over where their data goes.
What's next for Squirrelly Home
- Integrating AI to auto-tag items from photos and suggest categories.
- Offering a home insurance summary generator based on logged contents.
- Adding optional cloud sync with secure, user-controlled storage providers.
- Enabling multi-user households and sharable inventories for family or flatmates.
