Inspiration

As a student pilot, I have found that being a part of aviation is a hard place to be in, and the stress of it doesn't help at all. From the Time to the expense, it gets difficult being in the sky.

What it does

It is supposed to help with learning on the go as easily as possible while absorbing the most information, like Duolingo. The core lesson is built around ATC and radio calls. So the whole application is helping students practice the stress of radio calling with a simulation using ElevenLabs AI. We also used a database and server to help network and connect so that if a student air traffic controller and student pilot want to practice together, they can.

How we built it

I built it in a hybrid tech way. The web app used Next.js, Node, React, etc. The Raspberry Pi was used with parts provided by MLH. The main server I used was FastAPI. The resources from the competion were Eleven Labs for the speech-to-text, sound effects, and voices. MongoDB was used as the database for all the possible calls.

Challenges we ran into

When working with the Raspberry Pi, I realized that the SD card was having issues, and I couldn't install the raspberry pi os without the wifi firewall blocking it. I found out that it was better just to focus on the web app for now and leave the Raspberry Pi as a skeleton for a prototype.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I was proud of the API calls I made today and of testing my deployment skills.

What we learned

I learned how to use new resources like ElevenLabs or FastAPI and integrate them into my projects. This was also my first project involving circuitry, and I had a great time with that too.

What's next for Squawk

Creating 3d prints for the Raspberry Pi box, implementing real airports for real scenarios, connecting schools and CFI's to the app and helping it grow, and adding more hardware like a Google Home Mini as a daily announcer connecting app.
