Inspiration
Remote learning was a huge challenge when COVID-19 first began. There is a lack of focus and commitment when it came to doing work. Demand and accountability are lost because we do not get to see anyone face to face. The problem with learning at home is that there are so many distractions and excuses which made us feel like it was okay to skip assignments. Gradually as the months go by work- ethic decreases which affects growth as a student pursuing their dreams. With the theme being k-12, my team has decided to create the app SquadUp.
What it does
This app will allow the student to create an account. The student will then enter what class they are in and what assignment they need to do. The app will ask if they want to be fully focused or have a relaxed study session and to enter the number of people they want in a room. The students will then enter a zoom link which allows for other students to join and work together towards one goal.
How we built it
For the backend part of the app, we used python for the account creation, user input, and the overall features for the app. In the future, we plan on using Django to make this is a fully functional app. For the frontend, we used React to build the user interface.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges we ran into is a lack of experience. For most of us, this is our first hackathon so we struggled to split the work into groups to decide who does what. With a remote hackathon, we lacked the communication needed. For the backend part of the code, we struggled with coding what we envisioned in our heads. We were not developed yet in the coding aspect.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of producing a project in a short amount of time. We got to experience our first hackathon and know what it's like to work as a team with one goal in mind. We got to feel the stress of doing a project and how what it is like to be clueless. We created a vision and an idea that can impact students from around the world. This app can improve students work ethic as well as future students.
What we learned
We learned how to use React and the components used in creating an application.
What's next for SquadUp
In the future, we plan to complete this browser and implement a browser lockdown system that allows the student to be forced to do work. We will have the students in the zoom rooms be on lockdown based on the Pomodoro technique. Every 25 minutes the zoom microphone will unmute which allows students a short 5-minute break to release their stress and free the mind.
