Inspiration: Embracing Human Nature’s Harmony in Integration

Our journey in creating Squad! began with a deep-seated awareness of the natural hurdles that newcomers face when they set foot in Canada's vast and diverse landscape. As Canada embarks on its ambitious plan to welcome up to 475,000 newcomers in 2024, there emerges a critical, organic need to weave these individuals into the fabric of Canadian society – not just efficiently, but with a sense of empathy that mirrors nature’s nurturing. Our extensive user research, encompassing stories from both erstwhile and current newcomers, unearthed a common thread: the innate human yearning for connection and community. This universal desire for camaraderie and support networks was a recurring motif. Such insights became the seed from which Squad! grew – an app envisioned not merely as a digital tool, but as a natural conduit, nurturing connections and smoothing the path for those acclimatizing to Canada.

What it does: Cultivating Community Roots

Squad! emerges as an intuitive iOS app, specifically cultivated for newcomers in Canada, focusing on their crucial initial five years – a period akin to the rooting phase in a new environment. The app streamlines the journey of forging both social and professional bonds. It branches out into two primary pathways: 'Fun', encompassing leisure activities like local music events, echoing the spontaneous rhythms of nature; and 'Career', for professional gatherings like Hackathons, mirroring the structured growth of a forest. Users shape their journey with a single sentence profile, akin to a seed from which relationships can grow, enhancing relatability and fostering connections. The platform intuitively recommends events based on individual preferences, akin to how nature aligns with inherent needs, encourages participation in events, and cultivates interactions with fellow attendees through event-specific chat rooms, thus fostering a sense of community and belonging, reminiscent of a tree finding its place in a forest.

How we built it: Crafting with Care

The construction of Squad! was akin to cultivating a garden – multifaceted and meticulous. It began with in-depth user research, sowing the seeds by identifying the fundamental needs of our target group. The design phase involved sculpting low-fi and high-fi wireframes, ensuring the app’s architecture was as user-friendly as the design of a leaf. Development was rooted in iOS, Canada’s most prevalent smartphone ecosystem. We interwove APIs like Yelp for event discovery, focusing on creating a user experience as seamless as a river, with interactive features like chat rooms and personalized event suggestions that blossom like flowers in spring.

Challenges we ran into: Navigating Through the Thicket

Our journey was not without its brambles, particularly when it came to working with SwiftUI. As a team new to this framework, which itself was relatively nascent, we encountered significant challenges akin to navigating a dense, unfamiliar forest. A major hurdle we faced was with dynamic content updating in SwiftUI. This challenge was analogous to a young tree struggling to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Specifically, we found ourselves at an impasse when it came to reflecting the events suggested by the API. The core issue lay in the app’s inability to generate components based on the search results provided by the API. From a UX perspective, it was imperative to differentiate our app from conventional event finders, much like how a unique flower stands out in a meadow. We achieved this by accentuating features like personalized event recommendations and event-specific chat rooms, akin to creating a unique ecosystem within the vast digital forest.

Accomplishments that we're proud of: Blossoming Success

We take immense pride in nurturing a user-centric app that resonates deeply with the needs of newcomers in Canada. Transforming conceptual seeds into a functional, aesthetically pleasing, and intuitive app within a limited time frame is a testament to our team's dedication and skill, much like a gardener’s pride in a flourishing garden. The integration of bespoke features, like tailored event recommendations and interactive chat rooms, distinguishes Squad! as a unique platform for fostering community connections, much like a rare plant that attracts diverse wildlife.

What we learned: Growth and Discovery

This project was a journey of growth and discovery, much like a sapling maturing into a sturdy tree. We learned the essence of focused development, especially under the constraints of time, paralleling the way nature prioritizes essential growth. It taught us to value core functionalities over a plethora of features, akin to a plant focusing its energy on vital parts. We delved into the unique challenges faced by newcomers, understanding the pivotal role of technology in easing their adaptation, and honing our skills in iOS development and API integration, akin to a tree strengthening its roots and branches.

What's next for Squad!: Cultivating Inclusivity

Looking ahead, Squad! seeks to broaden its canopy and deepen its roots. We aim to introduce multilingual support, reflecting the diverse linguistic landscape of newcomers. Ongoing evolution based on user feedback will be key, much like a plant adapting to its environment. We’re exploring symbiotic partnerships with local entities to enrich our event offerings. Additionally, plans are underway to develop an Android version, ensuring wider accessibility. Our vision is to establish Squad! as an essential, nurturing tool for newcomers in Canada, truly building bridges and fostering a more inclusive and interconnected community, mirroring the harmonious diversity of human nature.
