The overflow of QR codes we see everywhere in the city and all the times we've been asked to scan a QR code to get to a website. We also are
What it does?
SQR is a security-driven tool designed to detect and prevent QR-based phishing threats. It provides users with a real-time QR code safety check, analyzing the destination URL before they interact with it. Our solution aims to ensure QR codes remain a trusted tool while protecting users from cyber threats.
How we built it
- We started by brainstorming security concerns that affect us in everyday life. One issue that stood out was the overwhelming presence of QR codes—while they provide convenience, they also pose a major security risk due to their lack of transparency. We realized that there’s no easy way to verify if a QR code is safe before scanning it.
- Design and Research: problem statements, crazy 8, sitemaps, wireframes, figma prototype.
- Coding: Set up a functional working site.
Challenges we ran into
- Open ssl connection
- Cors
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Being able to have a prototype up and running.
- Establishing a domain and lightweight, efficient QR scanning tool without sacrificing security.
- Created a seamless user experience, making security simple and accessible.-
What we learned
- Using the Gemini API
What's next for SQR
- Enhancing our threat detection to identify new attack patterns and building a user populated database.
- Partnering with businesses and institutions to promote safer QR code usage.
- Developing a browser extension and mobile app for widespread accessibility.
- Expanding to enterprise security solutions for organizations that rely on QR codes.
