Inspiration
Most businesses don’t fail because the idea was bad — they fail because the location was.
But how does a new entrepreneur choose a spot? By price. By gut. By vibes?
That didn’t sit right with us.
We wanted to flip that gamble.
What if the first step — the scariest part of launching a business — felt less like a leap of faith… and more like a smart decision?
What if something could hold your hand through that first step, and tell you:
_ This is a place where your business can grow. _
What it does
SproutPoint is your business location co-pilot.
You drop in a few address options and the type of business you want to open (café, gym, studio, etc.) — and SproutPoint returns a smart, ranked list.
It scores each location based on real-world metrics like:
- Income levels in the area
- Competition nearby
- Foot traffic potential (population + school/business density)
- Parking availability
Everything is weighted specifically for your business category, so you get a recommendation that actually fits what you're trying to build.
How we built it
We developed a tool that predicts how well a business could perform at a specific address, powered by a diverse range of data sources:
Google Places API – competitor locations and business density Tavily – contextual search and local intelligence
Neighbourhood-level demographic data from the Canadian Census including:
- Geographic income distribution
- Population density
- Property value data
A Python backend processes and aggregates the data, while a clean, user-friendly UI presents insights clearly. We also dedicated time to developing a strong brand, including name, logo, and design.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing multiple weighted metrics into one meaningful score
- retrieving and analyzing massive amounts of census data.
- Parsing structured location and business data from Google
- Bridging frontend and backend logic cleanly in 7 hours
- Designing for non-technical users without oversimplifying
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a full scoring engine and UI in less than 7 hours
- Made a tool that feels genuinely helpful to early-stage entrepreneurs
What we learned
- How to prioritize decision-making metrics for different business types
- How to blend AI APIs and geolocation logic in a practical workflow
- That good UX is half the battle — and clear recommendations matter more than raw data
- How to work fast, clean, and collaboratively under pressure
What's next for SproutPoint — Know Where to Grow
- Allow bulk comparison across hundreds of venues
- Add visual map overlays with heat zones and proximity warnings
- Personalize scoring logic based on niche business goals (e.g. vegan café vs franchise)
- Build a full onboarding flow to guide first-time founders from idea → venue → success
SproutPoint is more than a tool — it’s a quiet little push forward for anyone who dares to start something new.
