Inspiration

We love Travel. We love the environment. And just like us, the majority of Gen Z is prioritizing travel and their love for the environment 90% of Gen Z members reported making changes in their daily lives to live more sustainably, and according to Fortune, 79% Of Gen Z and Millennials see leisure travel as an important budget priority. This inspired us to build Sproute, to help people do what they already want to do while being as sustainable as possible.

What it does

Sproute is an AI-powered travel planner that prioritizes sustainability and making eco-friendly travel choices. Simply add your destination and preferences, and Sproute will give you a detailed itinerary of activities to do once you're at your destination including location, description, cost. Sproute will also give you the most sustainable mode of transportation between your activities with the time it takes, cost, and emissions associated with it. Sproute also allows you to add the itinerary to your calendar by downloading an ics file.

How we built it

On the frontend we used React with shadcn and React Router. We used Flask to handle our itinerary generation, leveraging Groq and langchain for detailed and sustainable activity suggestions. We spent a significant amount of time engineering our prompt to prioritize activities with minimal carbon footprints and to ensure transportation between activities is as eco-friendly as possible. We calculate the carbon footprint for each instance of traveling based on the structured output of our LLM. To ensure ease of development, we used Docker to package each of our services.

Challenges we ran into

Our first iteration of the backend would take longer than a minute to fulfill a request. By utilizing groq's inferencing power and formulating a more concise yet still comprehensive prompt, we were able to reduce this latency by a factor of 10.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is our first time working with some of these tools and we are proud in this limited time we were able to build a fully functioning MVP.

What's next for Sproute

Our mission is to help people do what they already want to do while being as sustainable as possible using AI. Sproute doesn't stop at trip planning, we envision a product that helps people improve and rewards them for being more sustainable, including envisioning a sproute credit card that rewards the user for making green purchases, helps with tracking all the metrics of sustainability using AI.
