Inspiration
We were inspired by our dying house plants.
What it does
Sprout is a plant pot that provides visual feedback regarding the two main causes for plant death— light intensity and moisture level. This information is given through color changing LEDs. There are 2 distinct LED's- a red one, corresponding to light intensity, and a blue one, corresponding to moisture content. For our project, we used the DHT sensor to detect humidity as a replacement for a soil moisture sensor because we did not have this sensor. As the light intensity or humidity increases the LEDs increase in brightness. As the light and humidity decrease the LEDs dim. This gives the plant owner visual feedback on 2 vital metrics.
How we built it
For the Hardware we used an Arduino microprocessor and LED lights. For the Software, we used the Arduino IDE.
Challenges we ran into
We struggles integrating wifi into our final design. We believe the problem we ran into was due to the fact that the NodeMCU only accepted digital inputs and we were trying to use analog inputs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud about how responsive the photovoltaic LED sensor was. It is very easy for the user to tell when their plant is receiving to little or too much light.
What we learned
We learned about logic, such as what-if statements. Another useful skill we picked up was mapping. The inputs from the sensors was outside of the 0-255 range the LED light accepted. For this reason we had to map the input values into this range and it worked very well!
What's next for Sprout - The Plant Health Indicator
We hope to design a physical plant pot that the sensors can sit in. Additionally, we hope to change the LED lights to an LED strip so they can wrap around the pot for a better aesthetic.
