Inspiration
I built Sprout Atlas after noticing a simple but important gap in everyday food knowledge. Many people around me could recognize common fruits and vegetables, but they did not always know what they were, what nutrients they provided, how to store them correctly, or how to make informed choices about their safety and growing practices.
People often asked questions such as:
- What fruit or vegetable is this?
- What nutrients does it contain?
- How should it be stored to reduce waste?
- What chemicals or treatments may be used while it is grown?
- How can it be washed, prepared, and consumed safely?
- What makes it a useful part of a balanced diet?
These questions made me realize that reliable food education should be easier to access. Information is often spread across complicated articles, labels, and search results, which can make learning feel difficult—especially for younger learners and families.
Sprout Atlas is not just a food directory. It is a learning tool that encourages curiosity about where our food comes from, how it supports our health, and how small everyday choices can help us waste less and eat more thoughtfully.
“Learn what nourishes us, one bite at a time.”
What it does
Sprout Atlas is an interactive educational platform that helps people understand fruits and vegetables beyond their names and appearance. It provides detailed, easy-to-read guides covering nutrition, storage, growing basics, food safety, and common crop treatments.
Users can browse a large collection of fruits and vegetables, search for items even with spelling mistakes, and open dedicated pages for deeper information. The platform also includes a daily quiz to make learning more engaging and memorable.
By bringing practical food knowledge into one clear, visual experience, Sprout Atlas helps learners make more informed choices about what they eat, how they store food, and where it comes from.
How we built it
Sprout Atlas was built as a lightweight, browser-based educational experience using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This approach keeps the platform fast, accessible, and simple to open without requiring a complex installation process.
We created a structured catalog of 500 fruit and vegetable guides, each designed to provide practical information such as nutrition, storage, growing basics, food safety, and crop-treatment context. JavaScript powers the interactive parts of the experience, including category browsing, detailed guide pages, spelling-tolerant search, and a date-based daily quiz.
To make the platform easier to maintain, we also designed an optional Atlas Studio editor that can update guide information directly in the browser. For deeper learning support, Sprout Atlas includes an optional AI tutor concept powered by the OpenAI Responses API, helping users ask follow-up questions in natural language.
Codex helped shape and accelerate the development process—from designing the educational experience and guide structure to improving search, interactivity, and the overall visual presentation.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was organizing a large amount of food information without making the website feel crowded or difficult to use. Sprout Atlas includes hundreds of fruit and vegetable guides, so we needed a clear structure that kept browsing simple while still allowing users to access detailed information when they wanted it.
Search was another important challenge. People may not know the exact spelling of a fruit or vegetable, so a basic keyword search was not enough. We improved the search experience to provide helpful matches even when a user makes a spelling mistake.
We also had to present information about crop treatments and food safety responsibly. These topics can be complex and vary by location, so the content is framed as general educational guidance rather than instructions or professional agricultural advice.
Finally, we wanted the experience to remain engaging for learners of different ages. Features such as compact categories, detailed guide pages, visual design, and the daily quiz helped turn a large educational catalog into something more interactive and enjoyable to explore.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a complete educational platform that makes food knowledge easier to explore and understand. Sprout Atlas brings together a large collection of fruit and vegetable guides in a clear, friendly experience rather than presenting information as scattered or complicated research.
A key accomplishment is the searchable catalog of 500 guides, with detailed pages that cover nutrition, storage, growing basics, food safety, and crop-treatment context. We are also proud that the search can suggest useful results even when users misspell an item’s name.
The daily quiz adds a simple, engaging way for users to return and learn something new. Combined with compact category browsing and an approachable visual design, it helps make nutrition and food science feel interesting for learners of different ages.
Most importantly, we are proud that Sprout Atlas turns a real everyday problem—limited understanding of the food we eat—into a practical, accessible learning tool.
What we learned
Building Sprout Atlas taught us that strong educational products need to balance depth with simplicity. There is a lot of useful information about food, nutrition, storage, and growing practices, but users benefit most when it is organized into short, clear, and easy-to-explore sections.
We also learned that search is a major part of accessibility. Supporting close spelling matches helps users find information even when they do not know the exact name or spelling of a fruit or vegetable.
Another important lesson was the need to present food-safety and crop-treatment information carefully. Clear educational context, practical guidance, and responsible wording help users learn without treating the platform as a replacement for local experts or official advice.
Finally, we learned that interactivity makes learning more memorable. Features such as detailed guides, category browsing, and the daily quiz make Sprout Atlas feel less like a static website and more like a tool people can return to and learn from over time.
What's next for Sprout Atlas
Sprout Atlas is only at the beginning. Our next goal is to expand the guide library beyond 500 fruits and vegetables, with richer details for every item. Future guides will include where each crop is commonly found, how it is grown, how it should be washed and prepared before eating, storage advice, and clearer safety information.
We also plan to introduce a camera-based scanner that can help users identify a fruit or vegetable placed in front of their camera. Over time, this feature could provide helpful observations about visible condition, freshness cues, and appropriate next steps for storage or preparation.
Other planned improvements include:
- User sign-in, so learners can save favourites, quiz progress, and personal learning history.
- A secure, integrated OpenAI learning assistant for asking natural-language questions about food, nutrition, and preparation.
- Optional premium plans with personalised food-learning and meal-planning tools. These features would be designed to support users’ preferences and health goals, while clearly encouraging consultation with qualified healthcare professionals for medical advice.
- Improved detail pages that make every guide more complete, consistent, and useful.
Our long-term vision is to make Sprout Atlas a trusted, accessible food-education platform for learners, families, and communities. To bring these features to life quickly and responsibly, we are actively looking for funding, mentorship, and partnerships.
