Inspiration

Most overspending isn't one big purchase. It's the small, repeated habits, like the daily coffee or the quick online buy. Most budgeting apps only show where your money went after it's gone, and they feel like punishment. We wanted something kinder: an app that helps you spend with intention, so your money makes room for what you actually want. That became Spritz, a mindful spending companion designed to make room for bigger possibilities. [Add one sentence about your own story.]

What it does

Spritz ties everyday spending to the goals you care about.

  • Goals: Save toward up to five goals, each with its own color, projected finish date and monthly plan.
  • Insights: See your spending by category from your connected checking accounts and cards.
  • Habit simulator: Slide coffee runs from 4 a week to 2 and instantly see the monthly savings and how much sooner each goal is reached.
  • Challenges: Take on a habit challenge, track it, and send the money you saved straight into a goal.
  • Purchase check and wishlist: See what a purchase costs in goal progress before you buy, or save it for later.

Banking data in this prototype is simulated.

How we built it

A mobile-first web app in React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Recharts and Vite, with state saved in the browser and no backend. The goal projections, savings splits and habit calculations are plain TypeScript functions that we tested against brute-force checks. It can also be installed on a phone as a progressive web app. We used Claude Code to build and refine it quickly. [Edit to match your team.]

Challenges we ran into

  • Rounding: Splitting money across goals left pennies unaccounted for, so we used a largest-remainder method that always sums exactly.
  • The goal carousel: Our first version stopped taps from registering on the cards, which we fixed by capturing touches only once a drag starts.
  • Consistency: Keeping colors, spacing and components uniform across about 20 screens took many design passes.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A complete flow from onboarding to goals, insights, challenges and wishlist, backed by a full calculation audit, plus a distinct bubble-themed look and an app that installs on a phone like a native one.

What we learned

Small habits matter more than we expected, financial apps need exact math and honest wording, and fast iteration with real screenshots beats long planning. [Add one lesson of your own.]

What's next for Spritz

Real bank connections and transfers, accounts that sync across devices, smarter nudges, shared goals for couples and families, and a native iOS and Android app.
