Inspiration
Our group was really interested in the avenue of mental health given the current conditions and stresses we interact with everyday. With this in mind we were brought back to our middle school days where we had little avatars we took care of to make sure we took care of ourselves. With this idea, we started SpriteWorld, a place where you can adopt a sprite to help remind yourself to drink water, eat meals, and much more.
With a calming pastel aesthetic and cute, fun sprite bios we hope that people will enjoy a fun, silly, and calming experience.
What it does
In this application we focused on having:
- An interactive checklist: It includes saving and personalizing the list
- A notes section, where one can type habits, thoughts, and affirmations
- An adoption page featuring our six lovely sprites
How we built it
We used Atom to build and launch the html-based page, it includes functionality with java. We used Aseprite for the pixel art.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a bunch of problems in the beginning. This included problems with GitHub (working with a group and merging/ pulling was interesting) and coding much of our original, unusable application in IntelliJ with an MVC design. After the first few bumps in the road, we decided to find a more developer-friendly application for the rest of our project
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are absolutely proud of our lovely sprite art and bios, and of course our features which allow us to customize and save out checklist! After so many hiccups with our project we were proud of the entirety of what came to be.
What we learned
We learned a lot in this project, like:
- Using GitHub for a group project with merging, pulling, and errors
- Using maven as a dependency, and setting up a project
- Coding in html and adding JavaScript functions within
- After three red bulls the chest will hurt
What's next for SpriteWorld
We have many goals for this application including but not limited to:
- Adding a daily reset
- Personalizing your sprite
- Having sprite mirror daily care
