Inspiration Spring is supposed to be a happy season—flowers bloom, the days get longer, and everything looks brighter. However, I’ve noticed that spring can also bring about unusual emotional changes. I sometimes feel anxious, tired, or just off for no clear reason.
After talking to friends, I realised I wasn’t the only one. That’s when I thought—what if I could build something that helps people feel more stable and supported during this time of year?
That’s how SpringMate is made.
What it does SpringMate is a simple, friendly AI-powered mood companion that helps people manage emotional ups and downs in spring. It’s not a therapist or a serious health tool—just a supportive little app that checks in with you daily and encourages good habits.
Here’s what it offers:
~Mood check-ins (with emojis and short notes) ~ Gentle, daily habit suggestions like “go for a walk” or “open your windows” ~Mindfulness tips and calm breathing exercises ~Mood trend tracking ~Spring-inspired soundscapes (like birds chirping or soft breeze) ~ Helpful resources on emotional wellness and self-care
How we built it I created SpringMate using: Python and PyQt5 for the app interface A local mood tracker using simple storage (JSON or SQLite) Chatbot logic written by me that I learned in my project of building a chatbot with SkillsBuild IBM (and GPT-powered suggestions) A library of daily habits and tips based on nature, creativity, and movement Plans to use a weather API for future mood-based suggestions The entire design is intended to evoke a sense of spring, featuring soft colours, calming messages, and an intuitive layout.
Challenges we ran into Making the chatbot feel empathetic instead of robotic was harder than I expected. Writing daily habits that feel fresh and helpful took time and research. Since I’m still learning, connecting different parts (like UI and mood storage) was tricky at first. Accomplishments that we're proud of I built an app that actually asks how you’re doing and responds gently. SpringMate doesn’t just log moods—it encourages healthy habits in a small, quiet way. It’s the first time I created something that connects tech and emotions meaningfully.
What's next for SpringMate – An AI Companion for Spring There’s so much I still want to add: Graphs that show mood trends over time Voice-based mood logging Weather-based suggestions (like extra motivation on gloomy days) A mobile version so it’s easier to use every day A positive feed or community feature (with full privacy, of course) In the end, SpringMate is here to remind people:
“Even if spring doesn’t feel perfect, it’s okay. You’re doing better than you think.”
