Inspiration

Champion City was inspired by the national conversation around Springfield, Ohio in 2024, and my upbringing in the city. We wanted to move beyond politicized narratives and show how one Midwestern city has continuously reinvented itself—from Shawnee settlement to industrial powerhouse to today's multicultural community. Springfield's story mirrors countless American towns navigating economic transformation with resilience and dignity.

What it does

This 30-second documentary teaser weaves together Springfield's layered history through naturalistic cinematography—from indigenous roots through industrial boom, economic decline, and contemporary immigrant-driven renewal. The film creates an emotional arc honoring both loss and hope through authentic locations: dawn parkland, archival factories, empty storefronts, ESL classrooms, family dinners, and civic forums.

How we built it

Using Twizl (https://www.twizl.it), an invite-only storytelling platform, we employed documentary authenticity techniques: wide-angle lenses for intimacy, minimal color grading, precise timecoded screenplay, environmental sound design with sparse musical score, and authentic Springfield locations with a multi-generational cast representing diverse community perspectives.

Challenges we ran into

Condensing 200+ years into 30 seconds while maintaining narrative clarity. Depicting economic decline and cultural change without exploitation or sensationalism.

What's next for Springfield, USA Documentary

We're developing a full documentary series exploring Springfield's transformation across six episodes, maintaining the naturalistic aesthetic while providing deeper character development.
