Inspiration
I'm going to travel to Japan in 2 weeks, and I built a tool that I needed.
What it does
Finds local spots recommended only on local forums of any country and city.
How I built it
Codex CLI and ChatGPT 5.6 for guidance when I didn't understand something.
Challenges I ran into
I usually use Claude Code, so building with Codex without my usual harness/setup was an adjustment at first — I had to rely purely on clear, explicit prompting instead of accumulated context and tooling I'm used to. It got easier as I went, and I picked up a better sense of how to prompt Codex effectively along the way.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
This is my first ever hackathon, and I joined with only three days left. I was genuinely surprised I was able to get this working in that time.
What I learned
Even with less time, I can still give things a real try. Constraints create pressure; pressure creates diamonds.
What's next for Spotz
Honestly, just making it a public tool anyone can use — if I can ever get the API costs down, or if it turns out to be worth monetizing, maybe it becomes something bigger. :)
