Spotlight is a video platform with a custom paywall for museums and theaters to share performances, tours and more with audiences around the world and continue generating revenue, even during the Coronavirus crisis.

Inspiration

During the ongoing pandemic, the art world has to find creative and progressive solutions to reach their audiences. Providing content online is a common practice, but for institutions like museums and theatres, there remains a challenge to generate revenue from their online audiences. With Spotlight, we set out to provide a comprehensive solution for these businesses to build and maintain a personalised media platform, provide unique experiences online, and continue to make money, even if their customers have to stay at home.

What it does

Our solution, Spotlight, o to share video/audio content ens up a new way share video/audio content with an audience. Museums and theatres can easily create their own custom video site, on wich they don't have to compete reach their audience. Yet, access to some of or all of the content can be setup behind a custom paywall (like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.). Spotlight reduces complexity and improves accessibility to digital media content for disadvantaged people.

How we built it

We built Spotlight on the basis of a prior project about a one-off video platform, wich we adapted to fit the needs of multiple potential clients like museums and theatres. We started by conducting a lot of research into the market and available solutions to find our own way of solving the challenges that come with the project. In the end, we altered and white-labelled our existing video management system, to make it multi-tenancy capable and dependency-free. We created UX/Ui reference screens and style guides and implemented them into a working system, consisting of a CMS that's connected to the video page that's accessible to users. We also created and compared business plans, marketing concepts and technical strategies, to find a sustainable model, that can provide value even beyond the current crisis.

The solution’s impact to the crisis

Our solution will help institutions like museums and theatres to generate revenue again, even without customers being able to physically visit them. We provide artists and everybody who would like to share their work through video or audio content with an alternative channel to present and sell content. This works for pieces of art, but also virtual tours, online courses and more. People who are affected by the crisis and have to stay at home regain access to their sources of entertainment.

Continuing the project

Moving forward, we are planning to make updates, fixes and improvements to the platform. We will evaluate the data we'll get from actual users and implement feedback and suggestions from our first clients. They will receive continued support and updates. We hope expand our client base and make our solution work for a range of different kinds of potential clients.

The support of the #EUvsVirus initiative with its extensive would be an excellent foundation for our project.

The value of our solution after the crisis

Spotlight will be feasible beyond the pandemic. This crisis just makes it especially necessary at the moment. The advantages of using a custom digital media platform and digital marketing strategy will not go away. Spotlight will continue to contribute to audience development for museums and theatres and create a new revenue stream for them. This makes Spotlight a sustainable solution.
