Using Spotify with AI to grab and tune information in music.

Inspiration

The inspiration of our project comes in form of implementing a music service for the DAIN AI. DAIN AI is a growing AI service that strives to put more services (social media, calling, etc.) for the best user experience. We originally were thinking of making a Financial Tracker until we attended their workshop and saw the impact that we could make by implementing one of the most popular apps as a service.

What it does

Spotify DAIN Service currently has four tools:

  • Get Artist info: Retrieves information of the artist, including followers, genres, and popularity.
  • Get Genres from Artist: Retrieves a list of genres from an artist.
  • Get Followers: Retrieves the number of followers from an artist.
  • Top Tracks: Lists the top 10 tracks with detailed information for each track.

How we built it

We utilized DAIN's Documentation to setup the project. Then we figured out how to get the service to run through the local machine. Next, we built the API handler with the help of Spotify's API documentation. Finally, we had to build each tool afterwards and train the AI to understand what data it is receiving through Python scripts while implementing the output for DAIN in TypeScript.

Challenges we ran into

Oh boy, we ran into a lot of difficult challenges:

  1. Attempting to start the service for the first hour.
  2. Getting the authentication process to work.
  3. Making our first service (took over 8+ hours to figure out)
  4. Vague documentation (DAIN AI is not too deep into giving the most details)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A few notable accomplishments were made during our hackathon session:

  • Create a service that the DAIN AI reacts.
  • Able to implement Python scripts converting API data to usage for TypeScript using JSON.
  • Be able to render images and data into the AI and represent them.
  • First-time hackathon team completing a complex project
  • Of course, using Spotify as a service in DAIN!

What we learned

  • TypeScript (we were all new)
  • API handling
  • Writing scripts and crossing paths between the main file and the API handler.
  • Using curl to grab API details.
  • The structure of the Spotify API.

What's next for Spotify DAIN Service

To integrate more tools to the service, including viewing user profile, listing recommended music to listen to, and even playing a track (if you have Spotify premium...)
