Inspiration

We didn't really know what to build. After pondering for a few hours, we sought inspiration from Gemini. The first thing it suggested was this project. The other three were not that interesting and were pretty common. All the team members agreed that this was our go-to. I think I saw a similar game on social media. It involved a 1-to-1 conversation with an anonymous user. And you had to guess if the person you were chatting with was an AI or a human. But our game is different because it involves a group of people.

What it does

All of us played or heard about the game of Mafia. It is a fun way to spend time with your friends and relatives. The gameplay feels extremely rewarding because your victory depends on your intellectual abilities. But what if, instead of a regular human disguised as mafia, there was an AI agent instead? It is 2026, after all! An AI agent is inserted into a group of 3-4 players. Each player can send a certain number of messages. The game has a few game modes such as quick game and standard. The quick game has 1 round, 2 players + AI with 3 messages for each player. Standard is a 3-round game with 3 players + AI, 3 rounds and a message per round. At the start of each round, the players are given a conversation starter. After everyone has sent their messages, the voting phase begins. Users have to vote on who they think the AI is. After the voting, the users are shown who has voted for whom. Then the new round begins, and a new topic is chosen. At the end, the bot is revealed and, if the AI player has received the maximum number of votes throughout the entire game, the players win. Otherwise, they lose.

How we built it

We've split the job into three parts. Fundi1330 was building the internal game logic. This includes the queue functionality, round transition, voting system, etc. Yar00myr engineered the AI to be as human as possible and worked on incorporating it into the game. And izhahoc designed a beautiful UI for our project.

Challenges we ran into

It is a bit tricky to manage time for all the websocket events. And making the bot emulate human behaviour is a challenging task.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We've made this game really quickly. It is one of the projects we built the quickest. We are really proud that we could elaborate to such a degree to create a basic but nice-looking and working prototype of an online game in under 30 hours.

What we learned

We've never touched any products that involve AI in their business logic. So finding out the best way to interact with the models and integrate them into our system was really fun and interesting.

What's next for Spot the AI

I plan to polish the project into a real game. But I haven't discussed the idea with my team members. I would love to finish it once I complete my other projects, and other members will help me.
