Inspiration
We wanted to turn everyday browsing into something more fun and atmospheric. Most browser interfaces are dull and uniform, so we wondered: what if your browser felt alive… and a little spooky? That idea sparked the creation of SpookyTabs—a playful way to add personality and mystery to ordinary tabs.
What it does
SpookyTabs transforms your browser into a horror-themed experience. It replaces your new-tab page with a spooky UI, adds eerie sound effects when you open or switch tabs, and lets you choose from multiple horror themes. It makes browsing immersive, fun, and uniquely eerie.
How we built it
We developed SpookyTabs as a browser extension using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—along with WebExtension APIs for tab events. Custom audio assets, spooky animations, and theme settings were integrated into the new-tab page and background scripts.
Challenges we ran into
Synchronizing audio effects with tab events. Keeping the extension lightweight while using animations and sounds. Designing spooky visuals that were atmospheric but not distracting. Handling browser permission limitations for customizing the UI.
