Inspiration
The project started from a simple idea: I originally built a classic Math Tug-of-War game to help students practice arithmetic operations in a fun way. When the Kiroween Hackathon was announced, I became inspired to remix my existing game into a full Halloween experience—something spooky, interactive, and powered by Kiro’s AI-focused features.
I wanted to blend:
- Educational gameplay
- Spooky Halloween atmosphere
- Kiro-based enhancements
- Fast math thinking
What it does
Spooky Math Tug of War is an educational Halloween-themed math battle game where:
- Players solve arithmetic problems (including multi-operation expressions such as: 7+3x4
- Correct answers pull the rope toward the player
- Wrong answers give the AI the advantage
- The battlefield includes a spooky scene, dynamic sounds, animations etc.
- Kiro’s hooks and specs help control, scene transitions, and environmental effects.
How we built it
The project was developed using a combination of traditional web technologies and Kiro's hackathon tools:
Core Stack
- HTML for structure -CSS for spooky UI elements
- JavaScript for game logic and math engine
Kiro for:
- mood/sound steering
- animations
- interaction hooks
- background story ambience
- spooky scene transitions
Steps
- Started by refactoring my original math tug-of-war game
- Integrated Kiro’s .kiro/specs and .kiro/hooks to enhance theme and logic
- Created new assets: Halloween sprites, animated objects, eerie backgrounds
- Added sound layers: bats, wolves, thunder, bells
- Reworked math generator to support multi-step problems
- Optimized UI and gameplay interaction
- Deployed on GitHub Pages as an open-source submission
Challenges we ran into
Mixing Old Code with New Kiro Logic with vibe coding prompt in kiro
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully transformed a simple math game into a thematic, AI enhanced Halloween experience
- Created a clean, fully open-source game with an MIT License
- Integrated Kiro’s tools to improve atmosphere and gameplay
- Deployed a polished version playable online
- Built something fun AND useful for students and etc
