Inspiration
My inspiration began with the 1980s movie Labyrinth - a world of mystery, wonder, and discovery around every corner. I’ve always loved the idea of walking through a living maze filled with characters who each have something to say.
When conversational AI became possible inside virtual reality (Thank You, Meta!), that dream came full circle. I wanted to create a world where you could not only explore but also converse - where a character could remember, reflect, and react naturally to you. That became Solan, the lantern-keeper of the labyrinth.
The name Spooky Labyrinth stays constant, while the subtitle changes with each creative phase (Solan, Threads, The Queens, etc.), marking the evolution of the world and its stories.
What It Does
Spooky Labyrinth is a mysterious maze filled with interactive stories and living moments:
- Solan welcomes visitors and shares the lore of the world, responding in real time to conversation.
- The Gremlin follows players when grabbed, then returns to its spot—adding life and humor.
- The 3 Queens is a light-and-sound story told through shifting voices and illumination.
- Ambient sound and visual design create a fully enveloped, cinematic atmosphere.
- The experience has been crafted to feel real, textured, and part of a larger story.
How We Built It
The entire world was created in the Horizon Worlds desktop editor, combining:
- Meta’s GenAI tools for dialogue, scripting, and concept creation.
- Traditional design software such as Photoshop, Windows Paint, and Photo Editor for visuals and clothing assets.
Challenges
As a low-code creator, learning to implement complex interactions and AI behaviors was new—but Meta’s creation tools made it approachable and rewarding.
Accomplishments
- Bringing Solan, The 3 Queens, the lantern pool, and the seasons room to life as core storytelling elements. The entire storyline and characters are original to this world.
- Designing custom merch connected to the story world. See the The Doll Rebellion shirt.
- Building a Loupedeck CT + AutoHotKey setup for smoother editing (files shared on GitHub).
- Creating a consistent atmosphere where sound, light, and narrative blend seamlessly.
What We Learned
I learned how to merge world-building, AI behavior, and VR design into one cohesive experience. It was my first time blending storytelling, sound, and code. It’s been incredibly fun.
What’s Next
- Expanding the labyrinth with new corridors and story-driven areas.
- Adding additional AI characters with unique personalities and memories.
- Experimenting with lit walking staffs and other interactive tools suggested by testers.
Spooky Labyrinth will continue to evolve - each update brings new characters, deeper stories, and richer experiences to explore.
