Inspiration

Spook-Indo was inspired by Indonesia’s rich landscape of folkloric ghosts—characters that are both terrifying and unintentionally hilarious. Growing up around stories of pocong, kuntilanak, and gendruwo, I realized how much humor exists beneath the horror. These ghosts are iconic, but they’re also deeply cultural, almost like supernatural celebrities.

My goal was to celebrate this folklore by remixing it into something modern, playful, and proudly Indonesian. In this episode, the idea of ghosts competing and flexing their “victim counts” like gym bros made me laugh—so that became the heart of it.

What it does

This inspiration allowed me to create a short that:

  • Blends comedy and horror while staying rooted in Indonesian identity.
  • Presents ghosts as characters with personality, not just scares.
  • Uses AI tools to give traditional myths a fresh, stylized visual language.
  • Makes Indonesian folklore accessible and entertaining for global audiences.

How we built it

This project was created entirely within the BudiCine workflow:

Anya (Direction & Production)

  • Story development and scriptwriting assisted by ChatGPT
  • Visual aesthetic design
  • Image generation and animation using MidJourney, Kling, Hailuo, and SkyReels.
  • Lipsync in Kling
  • Video editing and compositing in Adobe Premiere pro.

Kevin (Audio & Music)

  • Voice acting for all ghost characters
  • Sound design and atmosphere generated in Kling and Epidemic Sound
  • Original comedic-horror music

I approached the visuals like building a small cinematic universe. Every shot was tested for mood and clarity, while the soundscape was crafted to balance creepiness with absurd humor.

Challenges we ran into

Creating Spook-Indo came with several challenges:

  1. Balancing horror and comedy
Too much fear made the ghosts feel serious; too much comedy made them lose their cultural identity. Achieving the right equilibrium took many iterations.

  2. Maintaining cultural respect
Indonesian ghosts carry sacred and historical weight. The challenge was keeping the humor lighthearted without misrepresenting the folklore.

  3. Consistency in AI generation
Ensuring visual continuity — lighting, character design, expressions — required multiple passes and parameter tuning.

  4. Getting the right visual style
To still get the mystique and horror feel without overly doing the environment, or under-stylizing it that it feels less convincing, the visual style we approach is "stage-like" feel. As if this is a stage play. Therefore we emphasize the look by the use of eerie stage lighting and minor props. This also gives us more flexibility in changing the theme and story.

Despite these hurdles, each challenge pushed the project to become sharper, funnier, and more polished.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a short that feels distinctly Indonesian, yet universally funny.
  • Developing a visual style that merges folklore, comedy, and stylized horror.
  • Combining image generation, storytelling, and audio performance into a cohesive film.
  • Bringing three different cultural ghost traditions to life in a respectful but humorous way.

What we learned

Spook-Indo is more than just a comedy-horror short; it’s a celebration of Indonesia’s cultural imagination through a modern filmmaking lens. This project let me blend mythology, humor, and technology into something uniquely Indonesian — and uniquely ours. And how cultural specificity (Betawi, Sunda, Jawa) adds depth to humor.

What's next for Spook-Indo: Indonesian Ghosts Flexing

Moving forward, the plan includes:

  • Expanding Spook-Indo into a full mini-series featuring ghosts from Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Bali, Maluku, and Nusa Tenggara.
  • Adding musical parts for future episodes with traditional instruments teaming up with the late Elfa Secioria's Elfa Music School Choir, further adding richer cultural elements.
  • Collaborating with Indonesian horror and comedy YouTuber with million subscribers as the voice actors, also folklorists to highlight regional legends more accurately.
  • Improving character rigging for smoother AI-assisted animation.
  • Eventually producing a longer anthology film exploring Indonesia’s supernatural universe.
