Inspiration
Lockdown has been a challenging time for us all. People need to be pushed to talk to each other.
So we thought: why use positive reinforcement, when we can use negative reinforcement?
What does NotsApp do?
It's WhatsApp, but not quite.
NotsApp gamifies friendship.
We all know how competitive we Computing students get. This is a primal trait that all humans share. We exploit this… for your own benefit, of course!
If you don’t send any new messages to a contact in 24 hours, NotsApp becomes disappointed in you and deletes their contact. After all, if you’re not talking to your friends, can you really call them your friends? NotsApp simply gives that extra push to keep in touch, by aggressively pruning contacts that you clearly deem are not relevant in your life anymore.
How we built it
React and a lot of banging our heads against the wall to figure out solutions. And a small pinch of sleep deprivation.
Challenges we ran into
We started as a merry band of five
One gave his notice, and we were left with four
Low morale hit and three remained
Late at night another fell
Now we have two out of five original members
And somehow still have a working demo
Also we learnt React from scratch and somehow built the entire webapp between us two.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Honestly, we’re surprised that we made something in 24 hours that works, but we especially think the interface looks nice. We are also proud of how we worked as a pair.
What we learned
React is pretty cool! This was the first webapp that either of us made, so it was a very new experience. Working on this has taught us a lot about the development & building process and the challenges that come with it.
What's next for this beautiful app???
As both of us were completely new to webapp development, we ended up using an existing chat API to aid in implementing the backend. The next step would be to fully implement this ourselves (but this would definitely take more than 24 hours to learn and do!). We would also implement more helpful UI features such as a warning sign just before your contact is about to be obliterated.
