Inspiration
Originally, I set out to create an application which allowed for collaborative notes between students and teachers, however, I realized this was not something I would be able to complete with 10 hours left in the hackathon, so I pivoted to making a note taking app with some cool applications I had found online and creating a quick GUI.
What it does
Examines an audio file of speech, which is then transcribed and summarized. This is then sent into the user's desired notion file to be used in the future.
How we built it
Me, myself and I built this by first examining what note taking apps had some API functionality and was also connected to the internet, and I decided to use Notion as I already had experience using this platform. Originally, I created code that could read and write to a notion file, however, I pivoted to this idea after I realized I would most likely not finish in time (also, I was extremely sleepy!)
Challenges we ran into
Trying to figure out what platform I would build my program on top of and trying to figure out how to implement the functionality I wanted was probably the hardest part of this project. Finally, after switching to an easier idea, it was smooth sailing from there, other that the part the time crunch was quite threatening. Typing out everything in python after coding exclusively in c++ for a few weeks also proved to be a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Staying up past my bedtime to finish this without passing out at my desk! Also, I got to learn how to Notion APIs work, so that was quite a fun bonus :D
What we learned
Have an idea planned out before the hackathon begins, as well as have the developer workflow planned out instead of winging it and jumping into coding (like I did :'C ). I have also learned that I am complete garbage at graphic design and should not be let within 5 meters of a website making software. Maybe not start learning content not related to the project during the hackathon, however, I now know that stylometry examines the style of writing so that wasn't a complete loss.
What's next for Spokanote
I would really like to create a program similar to Notion and Obsidian, but in a way that I would have created it. This would entail creating my own text editor (I think) and GUI, which would be quite challenging, but nothing worth it isn't challenging so here we go! I think my original idea of allowing for collaboration between students and teachers would be a great idea to implement, which is definitely something I'll tackle in the future. Make the GUI a larger and nicer program with more functionality and is also nicer to look at. Quite a few other things, but the grind is real so my mind is blank at the moment :(
