Inspiration

As a college student, I often found myself overspending on coffee, snacks, and other daily purchases. To keep track of my expenses, I started manually recording digital transactions in Notepad. However, with payments spread across multiple UPI apps, tracking spending became tedious and inefficient. This inspired me to build SPNDX, a platform that brings all expenses together in one place and helps users understand their spending habits through meaningful insights.

How We Built It

We built SPNDX as a web application using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, creating a responsive and user-friendly interface. The backend was developed using Node.js, while MongoDB was used to store and manage expense data. Python was used for data processing and expense analysis. Development was carried out in Visual Studio Code, with Claude AI and ChatGPT assisting in rapid prototyping, debugging, and feature development.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a system that could organize expense data in a meaningful way while keeping the user experience simple and intuitive. Balancing functionality with ease of use required multiple iterations. Integrating different components of the application and ensuring smooth data flow between the frontend, backend, and database was also a learning experience.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We successfully transformed a personal problem into a practical solution that can benefit many users. We built a functional expense-tracking platform that provides a unified view of spending, automated categorization, and actionable insights. We are particularly proud of creating an intuitive interface that makes financial tracking simple and accessible.

What We Learned

Through this project, we gained hands-on experience in full-stack web development, database management, and building data-driven applications. We also learned the importance of user-centric design, rapid iteration, and leveraging AI-assisted development tools to accelerate the development process.

What's Next for SPNDX

Our vision for SPNDX is to evolve into a comprehensive personal finance platform. Future plans include automatic transaction imports, AI-powered spending recommendations, advanced analytics, budget forecasting, goal-based savings tracking, and support for multiple financial accounts. We aim to make SPNDX the go-to solution for managing personal finances in the digital payment era.
