Inspiration
We're always scrambling over who to pay after buying 4 party packs of chicken tenders Layne's, so we just wanted to make an app that splits the bill in an easy and user friendly way!
What it does
splitt is simply a bill splitter app that takes the best aspects from other competitors and combine it into one. Just scan your receipt with your camera, let the app fill up your bill with all the items, then you can start adding members to your party, and split the bill in any form you see fit. We even have features for ez/SPLIT which just takes a bills' total and splits it equally by the number of people you have in your party.
How we built it
We first did our research, seeing what other bill splitter apps had, and we kind of didn't like most, there was always something glaring at us, we took note of our dislikes, and then went into making a user flow chart. The main goal with splitt is to making it look nice, while also providing users with a smooth experience when navigating the app. Make it colorful, intuitive, and something realistic for not only us to use, but others as well!
Challenges we ran into
Nailing the design wasn't the simplest, we went through iterations, just making sure everyone was comfortable with the end result. If the interface is not that great, or if you're going through 50 steps just to split the bill, that kind of defeats the point of using the app for us, so we put a good emphasis on the UI/UX Design! As for the application's features, adding functionality for Venmo, Zelle, and other payment platforms isn't as simple as we wanted it to be. We had 3 ways that we wanted to use the application at first, but only 2 are able to be fully stemmed out.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that for this hackathon, we took an actual issue our friend group runs into, and built an application that we're going to use from now on, and we hope that others can see the value in it as well! Mobile development and design is also fresh to us, so there were many areas that we slowly navigated, in the end, we got a solid grasp on how to develop applications from the ground up.
What we learned
With mobile development, every pixel counts! We have to think wisely of functionality and ensure every feature we add, is intentional.
What's next for Splitt
We want to look into adding support for Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, and other similar payment platforms, fully realizing the perfect bill splitter in our eyes.
