Inspiration

We were inspired by our experience going out for boba the day before Dub Hacks; one person paid for all of it at once, and we were left confused about how to split it. We each used different payment apps: Venmo, Zelle, and international apps like E-Transfer. Splitting bills, tracking payments, and organizing shared expenses is always more complicated than it needs to be. We wanted to create a simple solution that makes splitting costs easier for everyone.

What We Built

Splits is a mobile web app with three main features: splitting bills without requiring friends to download an app, scanning receipts to assign items to specific people, and creating shared lists to track expenses.

How We Built It

We used Next.js, TypeScript, Supabase, Gemini API, Stripe, and Plaid. We also used AI tools like Cursor, OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, and Grok throughout development.

Challenges and What We Learned

Our biggest challenge was integrating multiple APIs and finalizing our technical stack while keeping the app simple and functional. Working as a team taught us how important communication, collaboration, and adaptability are when building a product under time pressure.

Our goal is to make splitting costs and managing shared expenses effortless.
