Inspiration
Our team's inspiration for "Split It" stemmed from a real-world scenario during a pre-hackathon dinner. We encountered the common challenge of splitting a bill at a sit-down restaurant, where shared and individual items complicated the process. This sparked the idea of creating a solution that simplifies bill splitting, alleviating the hassle of manual calculations and ensuring a seamless payment experience.
What it does
"Split It" is designed to make splitting the bill simple. Ideally "Split It" would give you the option to split the bill and choose what you ordered on your phone, and collectively pool the total bill money and send it directly to the restaurant. Additionally, the product would be able to transfer one's meal amount to a designated payer, accumulating the money under one card and transferring that money to the designated payer.
How we built it
We utilized Figma for design, HTML, and CSS for coding, and hosted our website on Google Cloud with the Django framework in Python.
Challenges we ran into
As newcomers to Google Cloud and Django, we invested significant time in mastering the technical intricacies of these frameworks and cloud services. The learning curve involved delving into Google App Engine, Cloud Storage, and Django's MVC architecture and ORM. Despite these challenges, we take pride in successfully bridging the gap between design and implementation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're especially proud of the concept and mock prototype of the project, and the discipline for learning new concepts through this event.
What we learned
The Hackathon served as a crash course in incorporating different frameworks and structuring cloud-based services, enriching our skill set and understanding.
What's next for Untitled
We hope to continue to develop this idea by linking payment processes and getting our prototype and concept registered under The Basement, our school's entrepreneurial incubator at UCSD.
