Inspiration
Splitting a restaurant bill after one person pays can be a hassle, especially when everyone orders different things. We wanted to make it easier to figure out who owes what.
What it does
SplitCore scans restaurant receipts, lets users assign items to friends, and automatically calculates everyone's share, including taxes, tips, and discounts. It also helps prepare payment requests and find potentially missed restaurant rewards.
How we built it
We built a web application using OCR to extract receipt information and JavaScript to handle bill splitting and calculations. We used Claude Code and Codex to assist with development.
Challenges we ran into
Handling different receipt formats, keeping calculations accurate, and making the interface simple and intuitive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a working application that brings receipt scanning, bill splitting, and reimbursement preparation into one place with a clean, easy-to-use interface.
What we learned
We learned more about OCR, processing unstructured data, and designing a functional application within a short timeframe.
What's next for SplitCore
Improving receipt recognition, supporting more restaurants and payment options, and eventually letting friends join a shared session to claim their own items.
