Inspiration

Years ago, at a BIMForum an owner/operator said, "I care about data. The model is just a viewer." If a BIM is really a database, then why are our solutions typically model-based?

What it does

A simple, open standard tool that separates a model (RVT) into asset data (XML?) and geometry (OBJ?). A door would split into asset data (room #, hardware, material) and geometry data (polygons, coordinates). The two datasets are linked by GUID, BATID and/or a custom asset tag.

To simplify things, we focus on Revit as a starting point and build the custom exporter in Dynamo or on top of the IFC Schema creator. The prototype should do the above and remain stable after some basic data adjustments. Bonus points for tying it to a model viewer or AirTable.

The team

Familiarity with IFC, XML (maybe?), Dynamo, some kind of UI. I have nil programming skills, but I have a mockup of the workflow. If you are interested in IFC and getting data out of models where it is easier to manage, then look for me on Friday.

What's next?

Ultimately, I think this could be a new vehicle for delivering open standard turnover packages. IFC for your viewer and CSV/XML for your database.
