Inspiration
We made this app because we wanted to find a way to make environmental change. We found it inspiring how the city of San Francisco attempts to go green and strategically sort their trash. At first, we wanted to find a way to inspire people to recycle all materials. But later, we narrowed it down to plastic waste.
What it does
It is a user-friendly game that gives people the incentive and recognition to recycle. We included a leaderboard to see other people's progress, a scanner to scan items, and rewards. The more you recycle and collect points, you are able to gain new items to add to a virtual ecosystem..
How I built it
We used a platform called Figma to create a prototype of the mobile app. This helped us visualize our special features and create a friendly interface.
Challenges I ran into
Learning how to use Figma was a challenge because we had no experience using it before. How to start and bring our idea to life was something we struggled with at first. We also had to figure out what incentives to add because people have a lot of different reasons for motivation.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud of completing our project with perseverance. We were able to effectively work together as a team to create something meaningful. It was an idea that started with doubt but turned into something really fun and exciting. Teamwork played a really important role.
What I learned
We learned how long it takes to build an interface and how developers make decisions that make mobile apps easier for the user to use. We also learned that when developing an app, pinpointing and honing in on what appeals to the audience is a key factor.
What's next for Splash
We could have collaborations with recycling companies and non-profits. Instead of just plastic bottles, we could focus on other types of waste. Because of the limitations of Figma, we want the sea creatures to have animations and to be interactive in the virtual ocean ecosystem.
