Inspiration

The many scams, hacks, service providers that disappearing, fatal mistakes, hacked emails, lost keys stored on laptops or phones - got us thinking: can we create a way to store your tokens so safely and provide access to your funds so conveniently, that we could even trust our moms and dads to be able do it? As it turns out, yes. We succeeded in this by building SPL Cards. SPL Cards provide highly convenient and safe offline custody of Solana and SPL tokens, and is simply a joy to use and see.

What it does

SPL Cards are stunning black metal cards that serve as a wallet for your Solana tokens. With a simple tap with your mobile phone, you are able to access your funds, and send & receive tokens. SPL Cards offer offline custody with the most convenient way to access and interact with your crypto. All combined with a gorgeous design.

How we built it

SPL Cards are made of gorgeous black metal, with a see-through pattern and contain a custom NFC chip. The packaging is slick and close with a magnet for a premium feel. The cards come with a Recovery booklet to write down your recovery phrase in case you lose your SPL Card and want to recover your funds. The accompanying app is currently available in the Play Store (iOS will follow later), and is built using Kotlin and integrates Tor.us for key management.

Challenges we ran into

We enjoyed building this amazing product. The project was a lot of pioneering, learning and figuring out how to solve challenges on the fly. One of the challenging things in bringing SPL Cards to life was combining very different disciplines: (1) designing and manufacturing physical products / cards, (2) designing and building the app, and (3) logistics of shipping physical products worldwide.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're incredibly proud with the end product. There is currently just nothing that's so convenient to use for interacting with your crypto. It's a product we would be very comfortable with giving to our mom, and be sure she can intuitively work with it and not make costly mistakes.

Also, building on Solana has been very rewarding. From time to time it was challenging, but we're so proud that we endured and didn't stop before we have delivered a gorgeous product that we're incredible proud of to start offering.

What we learned

We were incredibly lucky with the community around SPL Cards and their patience when it took longer to create the SPL Cards than initially planned. In hindsight though - infrastructure in crypto is often in its early days. So even if things look like they are useable / done, we would in the future keep in mind an extra margin before communicating dates.

What's next for SPL Cards

First we'll be working to fulfil all the orders and make sure everyone that ordered one of the SPL Cards, receives the card quickly.

Next, it makes so much sense to use the SPL Card to hold your NFT's. It's a bridge between the digital and physical world. So would like to create a nice gallery to view your NFT's.

Next, we're open for collaborations to create custom community branded SPL Cards.

Lastly, we will expand the cards to other blockchains - most notable Ethereum. The SPL Cards will be the card where you can store your Solana tokens, NFT's and Ethereum tokens.
