Inspiration
We were inspired by the common problem of managing personal finances effectively. Many people track their expenses, but they may not know how much they can safely spend after considering savings, upcoming commitments, and future goals. We wanted to build a system that goes beyond simple expense tracking and helps users make better spending decisions.
What it does
SpendWise is a smart personal finance application that helps users track expenses, plan future commitments, manage savings, and understand their spending behaviour.
It provides features such as:
- Expense and income tracking
- Safe-to-Spend calculation
- Future expense planning
- Savings goals
- Affordability checking
- Future Financial Simulator
- Impulse Purchase Detector
- Spending insights
- What-if simulation without modifying actual financial data
- Lifestyle-based financial recommendations
How we built it
We developed SpendWise using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. HTML was used to structure the application, CSS was used for the user interface and responsive design, and JavaScript was used to implement the financial calculations, simulations, validations, and interactive features.
We used browser Local Storage to persist user data and JSON for importing and exporting data. The main financial features are implemented using rule-based calculations and decision logic.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing the financial calculations so that expenses, savings, upcoming commitments, and planned purchases were considered together.
We also faced challenges in maintaining data consistency, implementing the simulation without changing the user's actual data, and connecting multiple features such as Safe-to-Spend, affordability checking, and impulse-purchase detection into a single workflow.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of developing a working prototype that goes beyond basic expense tracking.
Our key accomplishment is integrating expense tracking, future planning, savings management, Safe-to-Spend calculation, affordability checking, and financial simulation into one application.
We are also proud of implementing a sandbox-style simulator where users can test different financial scenarios without affecting their actual financial data.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to design and develop a complete web application from the frontend to the application logic.
We improved our understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Local Storage, JSON data handling, financial calculations, user-interface design, and problem-solving.
We also learned that building a useful financial application requires careful consideration of user behaviour, data consistency, and decision-support logic.
What's next for SpendWise - Smart Expense Tracker
In the future, SpendWise can be extended with a backend database, cloud synchronization, secure user authentication, and integration with banking or payment APIs.
We can also introduce AI-based personalized insights, predictive spending analysis, automatic expense categorization, and more advanced financial recommendations.
Our goal is to evolve SpendWise from an expense tracking application into a more comprehensive personal financial decision-support platform.
