Inspiration

We noticed that users frequently interact with their devices for home security but rarely use them for daily life management. We wanted to bridge the gap between smart home automation and financial wellness. Our goal was to make budgeting as seamless as checking a doorbell camera. n## What it does SpendSignal allows users to monitor their spending habits and set budgets using the Ring interface. It processes transaction data to categorize expenses and compares them against set limits. The system provides real-time notifications when users approach their monthly spending thresholds. n## How we built it We built the backend using Python on AWS Lambda to handle logic and data processing efficiently. We integrated Amazon Comprehend to perform natural language processing on voice-captured spending data. We used boto3 to interface with the Ring API and the budget management services to ensure smooth communication between components.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was mapping voice commands from the Ring interface to specific financial categories accurately. We also faced difficulties ensuring the latency of the Lambda functions remained low enough for a responsive user experience. Resolving these required optimizing our data parsing logic and refining our API calls.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how seamlessly we integrated financial tracking into the smart home ecosystem. The accuracy with which Amazon Comprehend identifies different transaction types exceeded our initial expectations. We successfully created a functional prototype that feels natural to Ring users.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the nuances of integrating financial data services with smart home hardware. We gained deep insights into how users interact with voice interfaces for non-security tasks. This project sharpened our expertise in building serverless architectures with real-time triggers.

What's next for SpendSignal

We plan to add more predictive analytics to help users forecast their monthly expenses. We also want to support multi-currency budgeting and more complex saving goals. Expanding the integration to include even deeper Ring-specific features is our top priority.
