About the Project
Inspiration 💡
Managing personal finances can be challenging, especially for students and young professionals who want to understand where their money goes each month. Tracking expenses manually and identifying unnecessary spending can be time-consuming. We wanted to build a smarter solution that transforms everyday financial transactions into meaningful insights. This inspired us to create SpendSense AI, an AI-powered personal finance assistant that helps users understand their spending habits, monitor budgets, and make more informed financial decisions.
What It Does 💰
SpendSense AI helps users analyze their expenses through an interactive dashboard. Users can upload transaction data through CSV files or enter expenses manually. The application categorizes transactions, calculates spending totals, visualizes expenses through charts, and compares spending against budget limits. Its AI-powered insights explain spending patterns in simple language, highlight potentially unusual expenses, and suggest practical ways to manage budgets. Users can also ask questions about their transaction history and receive data-based answers.
How We Built It 🛠️
We designed SpendSense AI as a web application with a React and TypeScript frontend for an interactive user experience. Tailwind CSS is used to style the interface, while Python and FastAPI provide backend services for transaction processing and API communication. Pandas supports financial data analysis, Recharts provides visual representations of spending patterns, and SQLite can store transaction information. An AI API, such as Gemini or Groq, can generate natural-language explanations and personalized spending insights.
Challenges We Faced 🚧
Key challenges include accurately categorizing transactions with inconsistent descriptions, handling different CSV formats, identifying unusual spending patterns, and generating useful AI recommendations grounded in actual financial data. Protecting sensitive financial information is another important consideration. Our approach focuses on validating uploaded data, combining rule-based calculations with AI-generated explanations, and minimizing the exposure of personal financial details.
What We Learned 📚
This project provides an opportunity to explore AI integration, full-stack development, data visualization, financial data processing, and responsible AI design. It also highlights how combining conventional data analysis with generative AI can make complex information easier to understand.
Future Scope 🚀
Future improvements may include recurring expense detection, savings goal tracking, multilingual insights, downloadable financial reports, and personalized budget recommendations based on historical spending.
Our Vision: To make personal finance easier to understand by turning raw transactions into clear insights and smarter everyday spending decisions.
