Inspiration You check your bank balance, see $2,000, and feel comfortable spending. You come home and realize that money was already spoken for with rent, utilities, subscriptions. The bank showed you what you have, not what you can actually spend. That disconnect causes real financial stress for millions of Americans. So we asked: what if your phone showed you the honest number?
What it does: Spendable connects all your bank accounts and shows one number, your real spendable balance, after all upcoming expenses are already deducted. It automatically detects recurring payments, accounts for irregular expenses like groceries and gas, and updates in real time. Beyond the balance, it includes a monthly budget planner that analyzes your spending history, a calendar showing every upcoming bill by due date, an obligation optimizer that flags unused subscriptions and savings opportunities, and a spending insights tab that tracks trends over time.
How we built it: React Native with Expo for the mobile app, tested live on iPhone throughout. User data is stored locally on device using AsyncStorage so everything persists across sessions. We used Claude as an AI development partner to move fast and bring features to life we couldn't have built alone in this timeframe.
Challenges we ran into: Neither of us comes from a coding background. Turning a clear idea into a working app was harder than we expected, data not connecting across screens, numbers not updating, animations breaking. We leaned on mentors, HackAugie resources, and each other to push through every wall we hit.
Accomplishments we're proud o: Sixteen hours ago Spendable didn't exist. Now it's a working app with authentication, real-time balance calculations, a budget planner, spending insights, and smooth animations, running on a real iPhone. The numbers actually connect. It actually works.
What we learned: Belief in your idea carries you further than expertise. We learned GitHub, AI tools, and how to debug problems we'd never seen before. The gap between "I can't build this" and "I built this" is smaller than it looks, we just have to start.
What's next: We're not done. Next steps are integrating a live bank API, building a backend so data syncs across devices, and making the budget recommendations smarter over time. This hackathon lit something up for both of us: Spendable is just the beginning.
