What it does
We have created a fun spelling game based on the Scripps National Spelling Bee so anyone can improve their spelling abilities. Unlike other spelling games, Spelling Hero uses a microphone to take the user's input, thus better imitating what contestants would go through in a spelling bee. It also is able to say the definition, the origin, the word type and use it in a sample sentence. This allows players to find out similar information about the word before spelling. An easy and difficult mode allows people of any ability to have a go at the format of the competition.
Inspiration
During these difficult times, spelling prodigies all over the world were forced to lay dormant as their spelling bees were cancelled. We say to those prodigies, worry not, because you can be a SPELLING HERO from the comfort of your own home.
How we built it
We used JavaScript for most of the program, handling the speech-to-text using Deepgram's API.
Challenges we ran into
Having never used it before, learning how to use Deepgram's API was initially quite challenging.
What's next for Spelling Hero
Having an AI that understands the user's questions such that there is no longer a need for any buttons. A timer.
