Competing for Best First Time Hack and Most Magical Hack

Inspiration

We observed that university students often struggle to maintain concentration amidst digital distractions and the monotony of prolonged study sessions, so we applied gamification to transform the University of Georgia campus into an interactive landscape where academic effort translates into tangible virtual progress and incentivizes physical presence at designated learning centers.

What it does

Spellbound acts as a location-aware productivity companion that restricts focus sessions to verified academic environments like the Zell Miller Learning Center or Hirsch Hall. The application tracks the user's geofenced position in real-time to ensure they remain onsite while accumulating focus minutes to advance their level. As users dedicate more time to their studies, they unlock collectible wizard avatars, dynamic video backgrounds, and expanded map locations.

To reinforce engagement, users receive a monetary reward in the form of a free drink from Jittery Joe’s every 12 levels, supported by a strategic local partnership and sponsorship model that integrates branded study locations at participating Athens cafes and creates mutual value through increased foot traffic and customer retention. This collaboration was designed not only to enhance user motivation through structured rewards and gradual progression, but also to support UGA and the broader Athens community as a connected academic and local business ecosystem.

How we built it

We developed the mobile application using the Flutter framework to ensure a responsive and visually engaging cross-platform experience. The core location logic utilizes the geolocator package for precise GPS tracking alongside flutter_map to render interactive OpenStreetMap layers of the Athens campus. Additionally, we integrated the Google Calendar API to automatically synchronize and display upcoming academic deadlines directly within the user's quest log, enabling users to connect external academic platforms such as ELC or McGraw Hill through their calendar integrations so assignments and due dates are seamlessly reflected in-app.
