Inspiration

A little over a year ago, my first website a personal finance blog got wiped out by one of Google's spam updates. I lost years of work and eventually the site itself. Rebuilding from zero forced me to ask a different question: not "how do I rank" but "what would I build if ranking weren't guaranteed at all?"

The answer was SpeedCalcs a site built around one idea: some of the most durable sites online aren't chasing trends, they're answering one narrow question really well, over and over, for hundreds of different niches.

What it does

SpeedCalcs is a free calculator and interactive tool site with 300+ tools spanning finance, auto, food, wellness, travel, tech and pets. Instead of competing for broad, high competition keywords, most tools target hyper-specific hobbies and trades that bigger sites ignore — cosplay budgeting, aquarium stocking, fly tying, lutherie, metal detecting, reptile care and more. Beyond calculators, the site also includes interactive quizzes (like a tarantula species matching tool) and a paid custom calculator-building service starting at $60 for creators and small businesses who need a tool built to spec.

How I built it

SpeedCalcs runs on a heavily customized Blogger theme I rewrote the theme XML myself to support structured data (JSON-LD for Article, SoftwareApplication, ProfilePage, Person and Organization schemas), mobile performance improvements and better Lighthouse scores. Every calculator and quiz is a self contained JavaScript widget (mostly IIFEs with no external dependencies) embedded directly into Blogger posts, alongside custom features like exit-intent popups, a scroll progress indicator and a text to speech reader.

Every new tool follows the same repeatable production pipeline: a keyword research brief, an ~1,000-word SEO page written around it, a manually verified outbound link audit using a tiered trust system and a pass to check whether any part of the tool can be stripped down into a standalone, embeddable infographic.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was starting over with zero domain trust after my first site was penalized. I couldn't rely on Google organic traffic early on, so I had to find a different distribution channel which turned out to be Reddit, where genuine participation and useful tool recommendations (rather than link spam) became the main traffic driver. Technically, working within Blogger's constraints to hit good Lighthouse scores and clean schema markup, without a modern framework to lean on, also took a lot of trial and error.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Building and shipping 300+ tools solo, developing a repeatable content and SEO workflow I can apply to any new niche and doing it all with no Google penalties this time around. I'm also proud of growing an engaged distribution presence on Reddit, Medium and Quora from scratch, and launching a paid custom calculator service as an added revenue stream on top of ad and affiliate monetization.

What I learned

That durability matters more than speed. My first site grew fast and disappeared just as fast. This time, I optimized for a foundation that doesn't collapse the next time an algorithm changes — real usefulness, real community distribution and content built to actually last.

What's next for SpeedCalcs

Expanding into more niche categories, growing organic search traffic now that Google Search Console is fully wired up, scaling the free tool for backlink exchange program with niche bloggers and building out more digital products (checklists, worksheets, quick reference guides) for Gumroad tied to the highest traffic calculator pages.
